Download and run Interactions

Basically what you need for a PC

1. Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version 1.3 (free, painless download)

   Your system probably already has some java capabilities as is but for this application you'll probably need to download the 1.3 JRE from Sun Microsystems. Of course if you know that this is already on your machine, skip this step.
   Please visit http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/jre/download-windows.html and follow Sun's instructions for downloading and installing the JRE.

2. Download the Interactions zip file below (free, but kinda painful (you'll need an unzipping utility(PKZip, WinZip, etc... if you don't already have one))

Interactions configuration instructions

1. Download the Interactions files here: interactions.zip (~52MB)

   • The sound synthesis portion of Interactions is possible through the use of the java audio synthesis API, JSyn, developed by Phil Burk, and this download includes files which are necessary to run JSyn.
   • These JSyn related components are provided under the terms of a Redistribution License from SoftSynth.com

2. or just download just the most recent Interactions.jar file here

3. Unzip the file into the directory of your choice

4. Configure the monitor_properties.txt file

   • This file simply tells Interactions how large your monitor so it will know how large to display itself
   • The file is located in the unzipped directory, in the subfolder data, in the subfolder config_files
   • Open this file in a text editor and alter the values of width and height to fit your system
   • Save the file, overwriting the old copy

How to stop and start Interactions

1. To start Interactions just double click the file run_Interactions_Windows (you can also make a handy shortcut to this file by right clicking on it!
2. To stop Interactions click in the X box in the upper right corner of the window which shows the input and output spikes of the neural nets

What do I do with it?!

• Once the application has opened, and all the parameter spikes have initialized in the lower left window, enable interaction by clicking in the upper text field of the lower right window marked 'URL Input Window'.
• Once you have focused the cursor in that window, all interaction with the installation is executed without the mouse.
• To input a new URL, type into the box and press ENTER to submit. Never append URLs with 'http://', just www...
• To vote for the Left agent, type 'CONTROL-1' (press 1 while holding down the CONTROL key). To vote for the Right agent, type 'CONTROL-0'
