Karl Kroeber
Karl Kroeber, Mellon Professor in the Humanities at Columbia University, served in the US Navy in World War II, was awarded his B.A. at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1947, and his Ph.D. by Columbia in 1956. At the University of Wisconsin, from 1956 to 1970, he rose from instructor to full professor and served as associate dean of the graduate school. At Columbia since 1970, he has served as Chair of the English Department, Chair of the Governing Board of the Columbia Society of Fellows in the Humanities, and Chair of the Executive Committee of the University Senate. He has been awarded Fulbright and Guggenheim and NEH Senior Scholar fellowships. He serves on the editorial board of six scholarly journals and was founding editor of Studies in American Indian Literatures, and isnow editor emeritus. He is the author of over 200 essays and reviews and a score of books, including The Artistry of Native American Storytelling, Ishi in Three Centuries, and Native American Storytelling.
