Death and Fire': Dialogue with Paul Klee. An Analysis. (With Volume II: Original Composition) (Musical Color)
'Death and Fire: Dialogue with Paul Klee' is a work for orchestra consisting of ten sections, continuous from beginning to end. It is approximately 26 1/2 minutes in duration. There are three 'frame' sections which mark three major divisions in the work (I, II, and III), and seven subsidiary sections (Inserts 1 to 7). This analysis discusses the genesis of the work in the paintings and theoretical writings of the 20th century Swiss painter Paul Klee, and finds similarities between Klee's concerns and certain aspects of the Chinese aesthetic. The overall structures of the work are discussed, and the methods used to achieve them. Familiar concepts of pitch and color are considered in relation to the work, as are noise (non-pitch) materials, and a fourth category, gesture, is suggested. Finally, this analysis concludes with a sectional analysis of the work in terms of the above mentioned concerns.
