The Harmonic Theory of Georg Capellen

Author:
Bernstein, David
Capellen (1869-1934) considered the following issues: the analysis of Romantic harmony, the expansion of tonality through an assimilation of exotic scales, dualism vs monism, and the importance of symmetry in tonal music. These reflect trends in the intellectual history of the late 19th and early 20th century, such as the development of monism and of positivistic philosophy, advances in empirical science, and the naturalist movement in German literature. Capellen's theories may provide an understanding of chromatic harmony and the transition to atonality.
