New Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellows Join the Music Department
The Columbia Music Department is pleased to announce that Alessandra
Ciucci of the City University of New York Graduate Center and Emily
Wilbourne of New York University have been offered and have accepted
Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowships for Fall 2008.
Ms. Ciucci, an ethnomusicologist, has studied the shikhat,
a class of professional female-singer dancers in Morocco. Her work
combines a musical analysis, an ethnography of performance, and a
broader examination of the role of women in Moroccan society. Ms.
Wilbourne, a musicologist, works on the historiography of musical
performance around the time of the earliest operas in Italy. Her
dissertation focused on the embodiment of gender, race, sexuality,
vocality, and sound in the on- and offstage careers of the
singer-actress Virginia Andreini.
