Opportunities to study this ancient court music of Japan are extremely rare in the United States. Students will be supplied with excellent instruments, including the hichiriki, ryuteki, sho, biwa, and koto(gaku-so). The instructor is Louise Sasaki. Some musical background (wind instruments, especially) and/or prior knowledge of Japanese culture are helpful, but not prerequisites. Ensemble meets once a week for 2-3 hours and will perform at least twice publicly. You must attend the first day of class.
