Tristan Murail

Professor Emeritus

Tristan Murail came to Columbia in 1997, having previously been professor of computer music at the Paris Conservatoire, and professor of composition at IRCAM (Institut de Recherche et de Coordination Acoustique/Musique) in Paris, where he was also consultant to the computer-assisted composition research team, and worked on the development of the program "Patchwork." His studies included Economics; Classic and North-African Arabic; Political Sciences; composition with Olivier Messiaen at the Paris Conservatoire; and computer music at IRCAM. He won the Prix de Rome from the Paris Conservatoire (1971), has several awards from the Académie Française and from SACEM; was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque (1990) and the Grand Prix du Président de la République, Académie Charles Cros (1992).

In 2011, Prof. Murail retired from the Columbia Faculty and now holds Emeritus Faculty standing.
