In our days every little kid knows how to hack the Pentagon, but few of us
really understand how to properly hack a simple battery-driven-kiddies-toy!
This is a workshop in hardware hacking for audio applications. No previous
electronic experience is assumed. Basic soldering skills will be learned
through building contact microphones and coils to sniff electromagnetic
fields. The students will open up a range of battery-powered "consumer"
technology (radios, electronic toys), observe the effect of direct hand
contact on the circuit boards, experiment with the substitution of
components, and listen to unheard signals running through the circuit.
Knowledge acquired through this process will be applied to building circuits
from scratch (oscillators, amplifiers, fuzztones, etc.
The workshop uses as a reference Collins' book on Hardware Hacking, to be
published by Routledge. A copy of the Table of Contents and Introduction
are available.
On Monday, April 18th , Nicolas will perform two compositions called "Bower
Bird" for battery activated loudspeakers; and "Slight of Hand" for
flesh-controlled portable radios as part of the "Alternate Controllers"
concert series at Harvestworks. These works rely on ensembles of student
circuits that will be built during the "Hardware Hacking" workshop.

About Harvestworks
Harvestworks is a nonprofit Digital Media Arts Center that provides
resources for artists to learn digital tools and exhibit experimental work
created with digital technologies. This workshop is part of "Alternate
Controllers" a series of 8 concerts presented from March 14 - April 25th,
2005, focusing on the exciting way that musicians and composers assimilate
various machines into their creative processes.
The "Alternate Controller" Series is made possible with funds from
mediaThefoundation inc., and The New York State Council on the Arts, a
public agency and produced in partnership with The Tank NYC's BENT2005
Circuit Bending Festival.
