Minor update: Attempted to replicate this on my Win7 machine.  No
love.  It appears the root of the problem may have actually been this
finicky hp2xx issue with tmporary files mentioned here: (
http://sourceforge.net/projects/gnuwin32/forums/forum/74807/topic/4425351
).  This is what running hp2xx alone reveals.  Not necessarily file
path formatting in chiplotle, I just got lucky (?) on the XP machine
(or the problem is not XP centric).  I have not recompiled hp2xx to
see if I can solve it yet for the Win7 box.
