Dear composers,

I'm writing to encourage all interested students to apply to the
graduate program in music composition at the University of Minnesota,
Minneapolis.

We have much to offer emerging composers, including:
* A composition faculty with international reputations and diverse
interests who are passionately committed to teaching.
* Excellent faculty in music theory, musicology, ethnomusicology, jazz,
conducting, conducting, performance, and music education, to help fill in
your other interests
* A wide variety of course offerings and performance ensembles
* Special programs in association with the Minnesota Orchestra and their
composer-in-residence, Aaron Jay Kernis
* Readings and concert performances of student works by the University
Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, and choral groups
* The School of Music's close partnerships with the St. Paul Chamber
Orchestra and Minnesota Orchestra
* Our new, annual Contemporary Composers festival, co-presented with the
St. Paul Chamber Orchestra
* Our annual Spark Festival of Electronic Music and Art
* Professional development programs, such as our work with local NPR radio
stations
* State of the art electronic music facilities and cutting edge classes
* A strong sense of community and cooperation among the students and
faculty
* The UM student Composers' Alliance, providing added community and
concert opportunities
* Many visiting composers annually, for performances, lectures, and master
classes
* Integration with the UM Arts Quarter to create collaborative multimedia
works
* TA positions and scholarships available (this year, nearly all of our
graduate student composers have some form of scholarship and/or TA
position)
* A roster of illustrious alumni including Wayne Peterson, Maria
Schneider, Libby Larsen, and Stephen Paulus
* All of the resources of a large and diverse University with the intimacy
of a single-building School of Music
