[dorkbotbmore-blabber] laser range-finders?

I would like to do some detailed mapping of, say, a landscape, looking at it horizontally, from slightly above grade.  It appears that a laser range-finder type setup might be a solution. 


Anybody work with laser range-finders or similar devices?  Thanks,
