I won't be able to make this but it sounds great. If anyone goes to this please post a little review or just details about how it went. I might be great to see if we could get someone to come and talk from Goddard or JHU in the future to talk about these types of things. <div>

The story behind the Hubble Space Telescope is a story many near deaths and<br>
amazing saves. Repeatedly, politicians, bureaucrats, scientists, and even<br>
astronomers made passionate efforts to stop its construction or terminate its<br>
use. Repeatedly, these efforts failed, as even those who originally opposed<br>
the telescope found that they could not resist its allure. The compelling<br>
nature of the unknown that the telescope promised to unveil won out each<br>
time, beating back every form of opposition or skepticism while<br>
simultaneoulsy compelling the telescope's supporters to make sacrifices<br>
surprising even to themselves.<br>
<br>
In describing the heroic and unknown story of the men and women who<br>
conceived, designed, built, and saved Hubble, Mr. Zimmerman will also<br>
illustrate how the telescope's design reshaped our concept of how space<br>
exploration should be carried out, proving the necessity of having humans and<br>
robots work together in space in order for humanity to successfully explore<br>
and colonize the solar system. He will also illustrate how the amazing images<br>
produced by the Hubble Space Telescope have transformed our understanding of<br>
the universe and even reshaped how astronomy is practiced.<br>

Bob Zimmerman is an award-winning science journalist and historian who has<br>
written four books and more than a hundred articles on science, engineering,<br>
and the history of space exploration and technology. His newest book, THE<br>
UNIVERSE IN A MIRROR: THE SAGA OF THE HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE AND THE<br>
VISIONARIES WHO BUILT IT (Princeton University Press), tells the story of the<br>

Magnetic Signs, Antennas, Antenna Adaptors<br>

The first order of magnetic signs has arrived and they will be available to be<br>
picked up at the meeting. If you have not already paid for your signs, please<br>
bring $10 for one or $20 for two signs. We will be sending a second order in<br>
the near future and you may place an order at the meeting.<br>

If you are interested in purchasing an Arrow 144/440 MHz dual band J-Pole<br>
antenna, we will have a supply at the meeting. The cost is $31 per antenna.<br>

We will also have a small supply of SMA to SO-239 antenna adaptor cables used<br>
to allow use of a hand held radio with an external antenna on hand for $8<br>
each.<br>

Upcoming Public Service Events<br>

Personal Preparedness Public Safety Expo ? Saturday, November 1, 9 am to 4 pm<br>

The Expo will feature demonstrations, information and hands-on activities for<br>
the entire family. Exhibitors include Howard County's Department of Fire &<br>
Rescue Services, Police, Health, Public Works, Corrections, Citizen Services<br>
and the Bureaus of Animal Control and Communications (9-1-1). Meet members of<br>
organizations that support and help manage disasters: Howard County's Civil<br>
Air Patrol, RACES, CERN, the Volunteer Center Serving Howard County, along<br>
with representatives from FEMA and MEMA. There will also be a display of<br>
vehicles and equipment used to manage emergencies. This event is free and<br>
open to the public.<br>

CARA and HoCo RACES will have an exhibit featuring an HF station featuring<br>
both digital and voice modes and presentations on amateur radio and RACES and<br>
ARES operations.<br>

The expo will be held at the James N. Robey Public Safety Training Center,<br>
2200 Scott Wheeler Drive, Marriottsville. To get to the Center, take Sand<br>
Hill Road north from Frederick Road (mid-way between Rt. 32 and Rt. 40).<br>
Scott Wheeler Drive runs to the right from Sand Hill immediately at the north<br>
end of the Rt. 70 overpass.<br>

Drive Through Flu Clinic Public Service ? Sunday, November 2, 10 am to 2 pm<br>

We will be providing communications for this yearıs flu clinic, which will<br>
utilize three locations, two in the Gateway Circle area and a third at the<br>

Howard County Striders Metric Marathon Run Public Service? Sunday, December<br>
7, 8:00 to 11:30 am<br>

We have been asked to provide communications for the Metric Marathon course<br>
