Its called WHDI and its made by an Isreali company. I spoke with their VP yesterday and he said that their products will premiere at CES 2008 (January) and that the products will hit the shelves in March. The products will be transmitter and receiver dongles with HDMI ports. The technology allows enough Ghz of throuput to allow 1080i uncompressed video with almost no latency. But here's what distinguishes it from the Phillips/Gefen technology (using UWB), it can transmit line of sight up to 167 feet and 100 feet indoors through walls! The Phillips?geffen is limited to 10 meters (and the Gefen uses the lossy JPEG2000 compression). I know its 9 months off, but is anybody interested in working with me to fine tune this technology for use in video production? It is worth a stop by to understand what they have and don't have though. Mapquest first before going though. When I'm doing a prototype, sometimes I just need to look at the connectors and such to figure what I need/will fit, so I want a shop I can walk into and check things out. And then there are the "dangit, I'm out of 1K mini linear taper pots and I need it NOW!" moments. Maybe Arcade used to be a lot better; but just about any cap or resistor with a "4" and "7" in its spec was out of stock. No 330 Ohm resistors at all. No protoboards of any kind, even just perf. Even their stock of NTE stuff was minimal at best, which surprised me given their web site. I talked to the guy at the counter and he said there is no demand for through-hole stuff anymore, but their suppliers (such as NTE) insist they list their whole catalog even if they don't stock the stuff. (Sorry for the dupe message, I got an email the first did not go through.) Thanks! - Lorne (Who moved here from Silicon Valley and misses Fry's, and never thought he would be saying that...) They should have better homes. You can read all about the MarkIII platform here: http://www.junun.org/MarkIII/Manual/index.jsp You can read all about Robot Sumo tournaments and weight/size classes here: http://www.robotroom.com/SumoRules.html Here's what I have: * 1 Fully assembled MarkIII robot - PIC Version (see note) http://www.junun.org/MarkIII/Info.jsp?item=1 Extras on this bot: Tigerbotics traction tires OOPic chip 256KBit I2C EEPROM * 1 Unassembled MarkIII robot (OOPic Version) http://www.junun.org/MarkIII/Info.jsp?item=27) * Extra parts and boards: Serial cable for programming 20x4 LCD (http://www.junun.org/MarkIII/Info.jsp?item=36) High intensity IR LEDs 10 pack (http://www.junun.org/MarkIII/Info.jsp?item=47) MarkIII Chassis kit (http://www.junun.org/MarkIII/Info.jsp?item=2) Extra wheel kit Replacement gearset for standard servo (http://www.junun.org/MarkIII/Info.jsp?item=40) Mark III Sensor Board Kit (http://www.junun.org/MarkIII/Info.jsp?item=5) Mark III Prototype Board Kit (http://www.junun.org/MarkIII/Info.jsp?item=4) Sharp IS471F Proximity Detector (http://www.junun.org/MarkIII/Info.jsp?item=46) Accelerometer Kit (http://www.junun.org/MarkIII/Info.jsp?item=6) A note about the assembled robot: after assembly, I was able to upload programs and do the servo calibration, but the IR range sensors didn't seem to work. You'll have to debug this (and possibly other issues) before you have a running MarkIII. There is a support forum for this bot which might help. I'm looking to move this as a single lot for $200USD. That's a substantial discount over the retail cost. Most stuff is unused, in it's original packaging (except for the completed bot, that is). One of the things you quickly discover in tech art is that no conceptual idea is truly original, and sometimes you'll find out that something you did with a Ardunio or a PC last week was first done by someone with discrete transistors in the 1960's. My first exhibited tech artwork "Memory House" which recorded video of the gallery and played back earlier recorded videos has been done independently by others about a dozen times before and after I exhibited it. Like a painting, you might not be the first person to paint a landscape, but the real artistic question is how did _you_ do it. So in Googling around for Dorkbot DC references, I found the WaPo "Weekend Now" chat from August 3, 2007, where we find out that Michael O'Sullivan is not only familiar with my work, but he also mentions Dorkbot DC as well... -Thomas / www.t11s.com Weekend Now - Friday, August 3, 2007 http://tinyurl.com/2azgkk Washington, D.C.: I read in the Post about the great success of Tom Greaves's street installation "The Compliment Machine," which dishes out compliments to people as they walk by. Then I read online about an Artomatic artist who had a similar machine called "Sycophant" a few years earlier but had very little notice. Mr. O'Sullivan: Do you recall the Artomatic machine? Are they similar? Michael O'Sullivan: I do remember "Sycophant" quite well. It was similar to the "Compliment Machine" in that they both dole out compliments, but "Sycophant," by Thomas Edwards, an artist who organizes DC's Dorbot meetings of tech/art people, was not just an impersonal box, but a robotic human head. It was rather hilarious, as I recall, saying things like, "You look really hot" and "I love your sweater." ... Was Sycophant: the one next to the talking fish? Michael O'Sullivan: Yes! That was the one. The fish--an altered version of one of the Big Mouth Billy Bass novelties--shouted out things like: "They're eating my eggs!" By the way, you can find more about the monthly DC Dorbot meetings (where art and tech collide) at http://www.dorkbot.org/dorkbotdc/. We're hoping to start the fall out with a great meeting on Sept. 10. I'd like to find some volunteers to "own" certain universities and periodicals in terms of getting the word out about Dorkbot DC meetings. It would be great if people could "own" student newspapers at: AU, UMCP, GWU, Georgetown, Howard, GMU, etc. All you need to do is to identify where to send press releases to at the periodicals, and then send them a copy of the meeting announcements (as posted to DorkbotDC-announce) with the words "Press Release" and your contact info on it. If you are interested, send me email - thanks! -Thomas From ederlyn.lacson at gmail.com Tue Aug 21 18:51:26 2007 From: ederlyn.lacson at gmail.com (E. Unless things have changed UMCP's daily paper (The Diamondback) doesn't really run announcements or classifieds. You'd be much better off getting a stack of flyers and stapling them up in the engineering and compsci buildings (as well as those cylindrical bulletin boards in the quads). Oh, and The Stamp union. Oh, and The Stamp union. My experience is that you can sometimes get the Diamondback to do a story if there is student involvement (like UMCP students going to Dorkbot, doing tech art, etc.) But yeah, flyers in engineering and compsci buildings is a great idea as well! -Thomas From tedwards at gmail.com Fri Aug 24 17:53:53 2007 From: tedwards at gmail.com (Thomas Edwards) Date: Fri Aug 24 17:53:57 2007 Subject: [dorkbotdc-blabber] Sonic Circuits 2007 Message-ID: <2fd1fa350708241453m65c7bee3gd6aecedd9993b71f@mail.gmail.com> [This sounds pretty cool - an amazing number of performers and venues! -Thomas] Festival of Experimental Music September 7-23, 2007 Washington DC http://www.dc-soniccircuits.org/2007/ The American Composers Forum Washington DC Chapter and volunteer coordinators/curators are proud to present an expanded SONIC CIRCUITS festival for 2007.
