A report on science club, from my husband who in the past has dj'ed there on tuesday and wednesday nights: Sometimes people book the upstairs for private parties, but *usually* that area is open and not loud. Plus, there's downstairs as well. As far as the mainfloor goes - the bar area doesn't get terribly loud (to me) unless it's really packed - and I've never seen it packed at 9 except on Friday's due to happy hour spillover, but again I haven't been there a lot. a And in the back near the DJ booth - well, the DJs often don't really get started until 10 anyway so it's probably not a problem. Again, he hasn't played there in a few months and I haven't been there in even longer, but it's probably a good bet for afterdorkbot. cheers! rebecca cheers, rebecca p.s. dc pho, a discussion of the music, art and the digital distribution of entertainment Sundays at NamViet, Arlington. 12:30ish to 2ish. Sounds like we should give Science Club a shot for "After Dorkbot" after the next meeting on Feb. 20. BTW, Dorkbot DC was mentioned by Michael O'Sullivan [art & film writer for the Weekend section of the Washington Post] today in an interview on WashingtonPost.com: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/discussion/2007/01/26/DI2007012601336.html "Anonymous: I like the concept of groups making art -- even using techno-dorkbot-gizmos -- it's still like a quilting bee! Michael O'Sullivan: Yes! And since you mention Dorkbot, I'll give this club a plug. It's a regular meeting of people who make art using technology (and that's very broadly defined) or those who are just interested in the intersection of art and tech. The next meeting is Feb. 20 from 7 to 9 at Provisions Library, 1611 Connecticut Ave. NW, Ste. 200. www.dorkbot.org/dorkbotdc/" Michael also recently reviewed "Cell Phone: Art and the Mobile Phone" at the Contemporary Museum in Baltimore: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/02/01/AR2007020100720.html http://www.contemporary.org/ -Thomas dorkbotdc@dorkbot.org http://www.t11s.com On 2/2/07, Brian Chamberlain wrote: > Not that far... > http://tinyurl.com/3ywrc5 > (tinyurl link to google map of directions) > > I vote we try Science Club. The corner joint, where Wraps was, isn't open yet. Zorba's is cheap, has beer, has a quiet upstairs area and is across the street; stops serving food at 11:10; closes at 11:30. Chipotle is up Connecticut half a block but closes at 10pm. Childe Harold is noisy but is open late and has midrange food prices. Any comments? Coming up @MITH: This semester MITH will be sharing several of its Digital Dialogues slots with events sponsored by the Human Computer Interaction Lab (HCIL) Seminar Series. The first of these is Jeff Pierce, (IBM Almaden), "From Personal Computers to Personal Information Devices," Feb. 20th, 12:30, 2120 A.V. Williams Bldg. So I took the opportunity to scout out some of the suggested "AfterDork" sites, and here are my results: Childe Harold: This place seems fine for drinks and casual conversation, and it is right across the street from Provisions. Plenty of room at the bar, plus seating can be had as well. Soho Tea and Coffee: Definitely a more coffee-oriented atmosphere, lots of art on the wall, but still a bit of a distance from Provisions. While there is music here, a lot of people seem to be hanging out doing homework, and we might be too rowdy for the place! Science Club: A bit of a hike from Provisions. In the wind I thought my face was going to freeze off. While the atmosphere is interesting, I felt a bit underdressed in my sweater and jeans, plus the place seems really small. It doesn't seem like great place to bring a group of more than four people. Dragonfly: I've been a big fan of Dragonfly in the past, and was curious what it looked like on Tuesday nights at 9PM. It is pretty much empty, which is just what we need (the place can be overcrowded on weekend nights). If you've never been to Dragonfly (1215 Connecticut Avenue), here is a description: "Restaurant-lounge specialising in sushi, sake and space age design. Created by the crew who brought us Red, you know you're on a hip trip when you see the vast, frosted-glass exterior. You enter a huge room done up in pure white: from the walls and ceilings to the chairs and tables. The bar though is brushed aluminium and it's lit from below with a greenish-blue glow. Bruce Lee movies and Japanese cartoons are projected onto the walls while DJs spin ambient, techno and various computerised sounds from a corner booth." The only risk of Dragonfly is that it is quite easy to walk by it if you don't know where it is. So my suggestion is for now let's go to Childe Harold for AfterDork, and when it warms up perhaps we can try heading south of the Circle to Dragonfly. -Thomas http://www.t11s.com From garethbranwyn at comcast.net Thu Feb 15 23:00:02 2007 From: garethbranwyn at comcast.net (Gareth Branwyn) Date: Thu Feb 15 23:00:25 2007 Subject: [dorkbotdc-blabber] "AfterDork" scouting In-Reply-To: <2fd1fa350702142306v1df7d4c6h2afa21fe8ce62f54@mail.gmail.com> References: <2fd1fa350702142306v1df7d4c6h2afa21fe8ce62f54@mail.gmail.com> Message-ID: Great scouting ops, Thomas! Re: Science Club There's an upstairs. Its quite large. Mediabistro.com, a writers org I belong to, has had at least one of their monthly soirees there. It was packed. We probably had at least 60 people in there. But again, the distance is the factor there. Re: Dragonfly I love it too. Their sushi is surprisingly good. Mediabistro has met there as well. It also has an upstairs, which is huge. Great drinks, too. Re: Childe Harold Sounds good, altho I hope there's decent enough space to gather around. If it's mainly bar seating, it won't be very conducive to group conversation. But we may have to just try out a couple of places over successive 'bots to find a good fit. Thanks for making the survey... To do so, it addresses famous photocopies of the 1960s and 1970s -- especially the Pentagon Papers -- illustrating ways in which documentary reproduction is a construct both dynamic and diverse. Neat that it has serial and SPI control. It still is more than I'd like to see it cost, but certainly it is cheaper than any similar solutions and if I had an audio project in the works right now I'd probably use it. The other end of the spectrum is picking up a cheap SD card player like this $12 one and hooking up the switches with transistors or relays depending on your laziness... http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=SIL-MP3-708&cat=MP3 ...or if you are also too lazy to buy a separate SD card, this one has 256 MB which might be enough for many art projects, and is loaded up using USB, its ~$20: http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=FM-H11-256BK&cat=MP3 The catch is to not buy one that has one of those funky multi-function push/roll switches that present a couple of different impedance levels to the controlling chip that you'll never figure out, but look for larger ones with simple push buttons. -Thomas On 2/21/07, Tim Slagle wrote: > I know Thomas and maybe others have been interested in reasonably-priced microcontroller-compatible MP3 player boards that don't require a whole lot of effort to use.
