The spec was approved back in 2004 but no products have come out (that I'm aware of or can find). Some quick searching only turns up mentions of the spec and spam/typos. Wireless HDMI cables were announced by Philips in February and were supposed to be available in May. I'm not able to find any listings, though. Here's the press release: http://www.press.ce.philips.com/apps/c_dir/e3379701.nsf/alle/019E216720FE6C3FC125725A0047E1EB?opendocument From mattbillings at gmail.com Wed Jul 11 09:03:30 2007 From: mattbillings at gmail.com (M@) Date: Wed Jul 11 09:03:32 2007 Subject: [dorkbotdc-blabber] Photos from July 2007 Dorkbot Meeting. As of right now, Dorkbot DC is seeking a new long-term venue. We may have a meeting space lined up for September, and for August I am going to suggest that people instead hit BarCampDC on August 11. But beyond September there is no plan for a Dorkbot DC venue. The venue requirements are: 1) Frequency: Once per month meetings 2) Meeting time: Weeknights, preferably 7-9 PM 3) Meeting days: Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday - the day of the week/month can vary from month to month 4) Internet acess: some kind of Internet access is required for presenters 5) Capacity: usually 20-30, but we've peaked up above 50 once or twice with good PR, so some spill-over capacity would be nice 6) Location: Walkable from a Metrorail. I think we will lose a lot of people if we don't do this. 7) Budget: $0. We generally raise $20-$50 in donations per meeting, but for most venues in DC that is the equivalent of nothing. We can work with a venue to try to get a grant, but that is speculative and forward-looking. Here are the "nice-to-haves": 7) Video projector and screen (we can probably scare one up from attendees for most meetings, but having one installed on-site is preferable) 8) Wireless Internet access for attendees So if you know of any place that might meet these requirements, let me know! -Thomas dorkbotdc@dorkbot.org From tim at slagle.org Wed Jul 25 18:05:34 2007 From: tim at slagle.org (Tim Slagle) Date: Wed Jul 25 18:05:42 2007 Subject: [dorkbotdc-blabber] Seeking a venue for Dorkbot DC In-Reply-To: <2fd1fa350707230946o3adda5edk80f1f5b1c3646233@mail.gmail.com> Message-ID: <100701.58188.qm@web30615.mail.mud.yahoo.com> The DC Public Library system has meeting rooms available for public use in the main library and branches. It seems like DorkbotDC would fit their criteria for use: http://dclibrary.org/services/meeting-rooms.html The main MLK library has meeting rooms, and two of the branch libraries I checked have them also: Memorial Library 901 G St, NW (202) 727-1111 M-Th 9:30am - 9:00pm F, Sa 9:30am - 5:30pm Sun Closed Chevy Chase Two meetings rooms: One 60-seat room and one 15-seat room. 5625 Connecticut Avenue, NW (202) 282-0021 M, W 9:30 am - 9:00 pm T, Th, F, Sa 9:30 am - 5:30 pm Sun 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm Cleveland Park Four meeting rooms: Two 100-seat auditoria, two small rooms, 20 and 8 seats each. 3310 Connecticut Avenue, NW (202) 282-3080 M, W, F, Sa 9:30 am - 5:30 pm T, Th 9:30 am - 9:00 pm Sun 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm The Cleveland Park branch is pretty close to a Metro stop and there are lots of restaurants and bars nearby for AfterDork. They may have AV equipment available and have free WiFi in the libraries at least. If this seems like a good option I can call tomorrow for more info and even try to check out the rooms this weekend. --Tim --- Thomas Edwards wrote: > As you know, Provisions Library is closing, and Dorkbot DC > will be > losing that excellent venue. > > As of right now, Dorkbot DC is seeking a new long-term venue. > We may > have a meeting space lined up for September, and for August I > am going > to suggest that people instead hit BarCampDC on August 11. > But beyond > September there is no plan for a Dorkbot DC venue. > > The venue requirements are: > > 1) Frequency: Once per month meetings > 2) Meeting time: Weeknights, preferably 7-9 PM > 3) Meeting days: Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday - the day of > the > week/month can vary from month to month > 4) Internet acess: some kind of Internet access is required > for presenters > 5) Capacity: usually 20-30, but we've peaked up above 50 once > or twice > with good PR, so some spill-over capacity would be nice > 6) Location: Walkable from a Metrorail. They use a Sprint Air Card to get wireless access during their meetings. They have tried a couple of things unsuccessfully, but it still may be possible to rig a connection up (as long as the library approves). I also have a Sprint PocketPC phone that I could tether to a laptop and get EVDO internet access as a back-up plan. However, we should probably continue looking. The main MLK library downtown also has meeting rooms (two 40 person + a 250 person room). The person I spoke to there said that WiFi was available in the rooms but that should be verified. They close the meeting rooms at 8:30pm even though the library stays open until 9pm, which would cramp our style a bit. The Chevy Chase DC library also has a meeting room but is ~0.7 miles from the Friendship metro stop, which may be too far (but closer than Comet Ping-Pong BTW). If not I can visit and scope out their WiFi situation. There is a library near the Bethesda MD metro stop with a 65-person meeting room, and Montgomery County allows meeting rooms in their Regional Services Centers (also near the Bethesda Metro). I don't know the WiFi status of those rooms but the area would be good for AfterDork. They charge a nominal fee ($30) for the use of the room but that would be doable. The service center rooms are available until 10pm: https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/apps/cupf/ebuf/rental/login/login-library.asp http://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/content/rsc/upcnty/mtgroom2.asp --Tim --- Tim Slagle wrote: > The DC Public Library system has meeting rooms available for > public use in the main library and branches. So, please send me your DIY projects, article and book ideas, and items you bump into that might be good for the blog. For instance, Thomas, DO send me materials on "Touch," as you develop them. Really excited about the new gig. This'll likely also mean I'll be going to the Austin Maker Faire, so other DC Dorkbot-ers, feel free to join me!
