The designers, working in the crowd, will have 4 hours to create a poster for 'X' using these words and the environment as inspiration for their designs. The screen display of each Designer's laptop will be projected on the club's projection and liquid plasma screens, revealing their individual approaches to the creative objective. At the end of the event, event goers will select the design that most creatively fulfilled the objective. The chosen design will be leveraged for next weeks promotional poster, flyer, and web site splash page. At the end of the event, the curator will select a winning design. The winner's design will be used on a promotional poster, web site and flyer for X as well as potentially incorporated into an art book. Since the big opening is Friday the 13th, I was thinking of doing an installation that invited people to experience a very large number of either good luck or bad luck superstitious things simultaneously. For example, a big ladder to stand under while opening umbrellas, breaking mirrors (may need to simulate this with projector and sound effects), black cats running around, stepping on cracks, number 13, hats, etc. Right next to that would be a place you can stand under horse shoes, 4 leaf clovers, rabbits feet, wood (with knocking sound), hands that cross fingers (Thomas?), number 7, shooting stars. Since these two places would generate some sort of potential difference in the luck field, maybe have something in between. I was thinking that this would be a low-tech installation without anything to steal (although the ladder may be in demand during installation time). I got a small but prime space near the elevators on the open 8th floor that could be used. Ciao! - Lorne From Sarah Lovering : I'm wondering if any of the Dorkbot people (or you even) have a funky piece of electronic art that they'd like to display at the circus arts festival I'm organizing on June 16th. I'd like for the festival to be a gathering of all things funky, underground, burner-esque, and titillating to the mind, so it seems that they might have some crazy art that would contribute to that. I'll try to make it to the apres dorkbot meeting on Wed., but I'm not sure I'll be able to. Would you mind spreading the word? (I'm also looking for installation art of all sorts, so if you know anyone who might have something they'd like to display, please pass this message onto them. I'll send out an announcement about that to the Burner listserves as well.) Here's a blurb about the festival (fyi--an official name for the festival is in the works): Circus Arts Festival - June 16, 2007 On June 16th, come check out the capital region's finest alternative artists in DC's first Circus Arts Festival! From 6 pm to midnight, you can watch a non-stop lineup of performances, including fire dancers, silk aerialists, fire eaters, fire jugglers, hula hoopers, belly dancers, and escape artists. In addition to performances, the festival will include circus arts vendors (come get your hula hoops and belly dancing gear!), fire sculptures, installation art, face painting, and food vendors. The festival will be held at the Washington Glass School, located at 3700 Otis St., Mt. Ranier, MD 20712. -- <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Lorne Covington, MediaDog Studios > Eat dessert first; lorne ayat mediadog dawt com > life is uncertain. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> From garethbranwyn at comcast.net Tue Mar 27 17:10:56 2007 From: garethbranwyn at comcast.net (Gareth Branwyn) Date: Tue Mar 27 17:11:15 2007 Subject: [dorkbotdc-blabber] Maker Faire In-Reply-To: <0A22E985DCEAEB4097B2183D76D4010883A162@wrfexch1.wrf.com> References: <0A22E985DCEAEB4097B2183D76D4010883A162@wrfexch1.wrf.com> Message-ID: I'm going to be there! Details are at http://barcamp.org/DemoCampDC2 What is it? From the wiki: "We'd like to build an active community for people in the DC area to show up and informally share geeky stuff. Do you have a tool, a piece of software, a set of scripts, new toy, hardware hacks that you want feedback on? Bring it. Show it. Share! Eventually we'd like to organize a BarCampDC as a weekend-long version of DemoCampDC."
