Some of these were originally part of a telegraph and bells network that signaled fire alarms. For more info and a picture of one of the boxes, see http://purplemotes.net/2007/10/22/call-boxes-for-whats-hot-in-sw-dc/ I'm part of the call box project in SW, which is where I work. Call boxes could be a good platform for technologically innovative, networked art. I've offered a suggestion at the link above. I would welcome any ideas, comments, or help. Possibilities for artists exist all across DC. Think about call box art! I have recently become interested in electronics, more specifically the Arduino, which is based upon the Atmega168 microcontroller. I have been playing with it for a month or two and love it, and have decided to make one of my own and have encountered some difficulties. I was wondering if someone here in the DC-area knows anything about either the Arduino, or programming the AVR Atmega168 using an external programmer and software (ponyprog, AVRdude,....). I would like help/advice in determining whether I have constructed the entire circuit correctly and how to correctly program the Atmega168 using a parallel programmer (or any programmer). If anyone has any experience with programming microcontrollers I would really appreciate the assistance, since i have been stuck for quite some time. I have all the gear for programming PICs but not the AVRs, though, so my experience is limited to using programmed chips. If you are interested, though, you might check out the "bare bones arduino" variant of the board, which can be had in kit form from the Modern device Company (http://moderndevice.com/) for 10-15$US each in quantity. I am sure that I am only one of many of the list who can help you with assembling the boards, and testing them once assembled. it is really a very remarkable platform- doubly so when the open source nature of the software and the retail price of the hardware is considered. The RepRap group is looking closely at replacing all of the PIC embedded programming with Arduino for that reason... If there is enough interest, I would be happy to coordinate a group buy, and we could see if we could get enough to get the price down to 10$/ea. -Mark On 11/6/07, Alberto Gait?n wrote: > > Hi guys, > > It might be instructive to others--and valuable for our archive--have > the back and forth here, unless your emails turn out to be >40K. > > Alberto > > > On 11/6/07 10:06 AM, Tim Slagle wrote: > > Hey Dan, > > I have hacked around with Arduinos and demo'ed an RGB LED > > controller project using one at the 3/28/07 DorkbotDC meeting. > > I also have some of the AVR development gear you might need to > > make your own. Simplified, paste the Pipes URL into a Message Box and prepended "download" and give it one argument, the path and name of the local file you want to save it to: [{bang}] | [download http://{pipesURL} ./local/path/to/resulting/file.xml] | [jit.uldl] etc... A bang to the message box sends the download command to [jit.uldl]'s inlet, which fetches the pipe XML and saves it locally with the name you gave it in the message box's download command's argument. Jit.uldl's outlets need not be connected to anything in this scenario as the download command is enough to create the needed file. I eventually used the resulting local XML file with the tap.xml.sax object from Electrotap (http://www.electrotap.com/taptoolsmax/). HTH. Let me know if you have trouble. By "breadboard arduino" do you mean this project? http://www.uchobby.com/index.php/2007/07/01/ardunio-breadboard/ It would be useful to try and narrow down where the problems are. It sounded like you already have one Arduino and are working on making another. Can you use your working Arduino to test out the programmer and programming software? Can you move the already-programmed ATmega chip from your working Arduino to your breadboard and see if it works there? That would verify your breadboard wiring. If you don't have a working Arduino, I guess I'd recommend buying one as a way of kick-starting the process, or at least getting a pre-programmed AVR chip. I like the Arduino clones that plug into a breadboard: http://www.moderndevice.com/BBB.html http://www.ladyada.net/make/boarduino/index.html These boards are cheap enough that it is probably worth buying them to save some frustration - you can always go back and roll your own once you know the tools you have work. I have the Atmel AVRISP programmer, which plugs in to a PC via serial port and then to the AVR with a six or ten-pin header. It is supported in the Arduino package for loading the bootloader. The USBtinyISP from LadaAda.net looks pretty similar to it (and is also supported in the Arduino software). I haven't used the parallel port programmers or AVRdude software, unfortunately. --Tim --- Dan wrote: > > Hi Tim, > > Thanks for the quick response! I am not really sure where I am stuck, my circuit may be wired incorrectly or I might be having difficulty getting the programmer to work. Taking Tim's suggestion, tonight I will try and get the circuit working using the mega168 from my working board (with the 'hello world' sketch flashed) to try and figure out where I am stuck. I may need help evaluating where my board differs from the schematic, or I may need help programming the new chip if all works out tonight. In the future, if i can get this working, I would like to make a website for the absolute beginner, since there is a lot of (mis)information out there right now. I will keep you guys posted. I'd say about half the people were able to get their BEAM bots put together during that two-hour workshop, but I think the LED array will take longer to build than those kits because of the free-form LED cube. People might need to work in pairs to get everything done during the meeting time - one on the LED array and the other on the POV kit board. It might also be nice if the workshop could be held somewhere that would allow people to stay longer than 9pm if needed to finish up. I think Adam and Nick were thinking about working in pairs, which makes sense for the reasons you state in your email. But then we get into the issue of who gets to take the thing home. Joint custody isn't very practical. Not sure about the timing. I think we have a hard-stop at 9pm. The event will be at the Koshland Museum again. Four hours would be enough time for one person to finish everything, and if people don't want to spend that much time, they can find a partner and work out joint custody for the bouncing baby cubes. I'm not sure five or six people could really work together on a project like this - only one person can do soldering on a PC board or an LED cube at a time. If the goal were to crank out product you could set up an assembly line and have each person do the same task on multiple kits, but that's not as fun and you wouldn't get the satisfaction of building it all yourself. Also, I would volunteer to source the LEDs for the cubes. eBay is about the best place to buy LEDs these days, and I've ordered from a bunch of different vendors there. --Tim Slagle --- Navid Rahimi wrote: > I think working in groups would be ok if the objective was to > learn but if > you want to walk away with your handy work then its not > feasible. I just discovered that there was a Dorkbot DC group through Make's blog. I'm fascinated by the kind of things that Dorkbot and Maker groups do, but I haven't done too much of it myself, so I hope you'll go easy on the newbie. I'm a video post-production jack-of-all-trades, but learning to program and tinkering with electronics is a hobby that I've not had too much time for lately, but hope to make it more of a regular habit in the future. Anyway, I was hoping to attend this Thursday's meeting and see the presentations. Are they open to anyone? Is there anything I need to know/do/bring before I come? Dorkbot DC is definitely open to everyone, especially folks who are new to all this. Skill levels at Dorkbot run the gamut, from real high domes (who even scare me) to newbies. We don't always hand- hold, but we're always open to questions and offering explanations. The important thing is to not be afraid to ask. For the workshops/project events, we have folks that can show people how to get started in soldering, what the basic components are used for, etc. We hope to see you on Thursday. - Gareth On Nov 27, 2007, at 2:41 PM, Mark Boszko wrote: > Hello, everyone. Glad that there is another video person here. I captured a previous DorkbotDC meeting at Thomas' request (former DorkbotDC overlord) and I am working with him on finding the best way to get this online (youtube, googlevideo, blip.tv, etc). I think his idea was to either post complete meetings online for those who can't make it or to post highlights as a way to advertise the group meetings and get new people involved. Its a good idea and one that I am will to pursue (although I won't make the January meeting and this Thursday's meeting is a ?). Are you interested in helping out on this? As Michael said, it's great to have another video person in the group and I'm sure we'll be calling on your expertise at some point (if'n you're willing and available). See you on Thursday! But Thomas was not treading new ground here. There are a bazillion Dorkbot meeting videos on the web (e.g., http://www.boingboing.net/2007/07/23/dorkbot-vienna-video.html). As much as I'd like to build an LED project (I really want to build some LED lighting modules for my video work), I'll be on vacation in January and will miss the workshop. I'm probably not the only one that can't make all the meetings, but wants to stay involved. Being able to watch a meeting that I missed would be great. That said, I'll complete what I did for Thomas, and let the new overlords decide about future tapings and posting concerns. I would love to give a talk on the project and what I have been doing, if that would be of interest and appropriate. Bottom line- I would be thrilled to talk! -Mark Gareth Branwyn wrote: > Don't forget Dorkbot DC Meeting TONIGHT! > > IMPORTANT UPDATE: Alberto Gait?n will NOT be presenting tonight.
