Hey,

I do a bunch of AVR programming, though I've never used an Arduino.

For parallel programming stuff, see this (my) instructable: http://www.instructables.com/id/Ghetto-Programming%3a-Getting-started-with-AVR-micro/ Also see the link in there which points you toward a USB programmer kit.

Both are quite usable, and I've set up the AVRdude + compiler tools on both windows (a while ago) and multiple linux boxes.

The parallel programmer can be as simple as a few wires off of a parallel port plug.

Where are you stuck?

    Elliot.

I have recently become interested in electronics, more specifically the Arduino, which is based upon the Atmega168 microcontroller. I have been playing with it for a month or two and love it, and have decided to make one of my own and have encountered some difficulties. I was wondering if someone here in the DC-area knows anything about either the Arduino, or programming the AVR Atmega168 using an external programmer and software (ponyprog, AVRdude,....). I would like help/advice in determining whether I have constructed the entire circuit correctly and how to correctly program the Atmega168 using a parallel programmer (or any programmer). If anyone has any experience with programming microcontrollers I would really appreciate the assistance, since i have been stuck for quite some time.
