Step 12 mentions keeping the lab supply set below 1volt and 1 amp, You
could do that with a cell phone charger (3.5 to 5v usually) and
resistor or just a regular 1.5v battery.

The advantage of using a lap supply (rectifier in the instructable) or
a charger is that they have good short detection to prevent fires, but
at that low a setting it is safe enough as long as you keep an eye on
it and try not to short it.
