If I want to travel to a wifi-spotty area and want to increase my 
chances of being able to connect to open hotspots, can I buy a wifi 
repeater and automatically pair it to an (possibly weak) open accesspoint?

I've looked at the antenna DIYs but they all require connection to the 
wifi module and I'm sure that's not practical when it's part of my 
laptop's motherboard.
