If you hack a Linksys WRT54G with the dd-wrt firmware you can
configure it to work in a "bridged" mode where your laptop connects to
the WRT54G (either wirelessly or via ethernet) and the WRT54G connects
to a remote access point.
This allows you some latitude for hacking the hardware since you'll
probably be more willing to accept the risks associated with trashing
the WRT54G than you would your laptop.
There are lots of WRT54G antenna hacks out there. Google it.
