I'd suggest you follow the design instructions for the specific RFID
reader - the antenna may need to match internal impedance in the chip.

For example, the Son-Micro antennas appear to need to be 860uH and 12 or 13 Ohm:

Impedance mismatch can reduce the efficiency of the
antenna/transceiver combination:
