On the topic of powerful free visual programs, another interesting piece of
software, is Quartz Composer (OSX only, unfortunately).  Comes free with
OSX, though you have to install it specially off of the disk with developers
tools on it.

It consists of a very elegant patching environment for creating visuals,
though it can be extended to communicate with MIDI (no OSC to my
knowledge).  Kind of reminds me of Yahoo Pipes in terms of UI, if anyone's
familiar with that.
