The Node started just a few months ago with 2 people and now has a growing membership and new space for activities at the Load of Fun building on North Ave. If you are curious about what the space is about or what members are interested in, come to the meeting. Since we just signed the lease the space itself will be rather empty. There will be plenty of DIYers/hackers there to meet however and we will be making our first steps towards organizing what will go in the space. So bring a pillow/stool or be prepared to sit on the floor. Ideas for creative cheap/free shop furniture are encouraged. Load of Fun is located at 120 W North Ave. The Baltimore Node space is on the left side of the building, in the space formerly occupied by On The Road Theatre(There sign is still on the window). This one is not Creative Commons-licensed, but I think it'll appeal to geeks, tinkerers, and artists alike. I wrote to Mr. Ganson and got his permission -- his blessing, even -- to put on a public screening of this video of his work. When: 8 p.m. on Friday, 21 August 2009 Where: 1525 Newton St. NW, Washington, DC 20010 As always, this event is free and open to the public. Arthur Ganson presents a few Machines "This DVD documents 36 machines, an animation machine sequences (3 short funny movies presented on my animation machine), a sequence showing how my wire gears are bent and soldered....and a few general scrolling text thoughts about the machines and the process. It is a straightforward documentation of the work which gives overall views of the pieces as well as many close-ups. The audio is strictly the sound of the machines themselves, except for Machine with Chair which is accompanied by a classical guitar piece which I wrote and perform." He gave a 15-minute TED talk in 2004 (http://www.ted.com/talks/arthur_ganson_makes_moving_sculpture.html) that provides a great view into his work and way of thinking. I had a chance to see some of his work at the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Massachusetts several years ago; if you find yourself in the Boston area, I highly recommend a visit to that museum. -- Katie http://hoteldetective.org/ From heromanjab at gmail.com Tue Aug 4 21:32:10 2009 From: heromanjab at gmail.com (Jonah Beram) Date: Tue, 4 Aug 2009 21:32:10 -0400 Subject: [dorkbotdc-blabber] HacDC movie night Friday Aug. 21: Arthur Ganson's Machines In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <4a746f1c0908041832w36386e8drecf012b04d118247@mail.gmail.com> The work shown in the TED talk is absolutely beautiful. / Jonah On Tue, Aug 4, 2009 at 9:11 PM, Katie Bechtold wrote: > Fellow Dorkbotters, > > Join us for another HacDC movie night! ?This one is not Creative > Commons-licensed, but I think it'll appeal to geeks, tinkerers, and > artists alike. ?I wrote to Mr. Ganson and got his permission -- his > blessing, even -- to put on a public screening of this video of his > work. > > When: 8 p.m. on Friday, 21 August 2009 > Where: 1525 Newton St. NW, Washington, DC 20010 > As always, this event is free and open to the public. > > Arthur Ganson presents a few Machines > > "This DVD documents 36 machines, an animation machine sequences (3 > short funny movies presented on my animation machine), a sequence > showing how my wire gears are bent and soldered....and a few general > scrolling text thoughts about the machines and the process. We just completed work on a community created mural in Takoma Park that was very well received. I and my collaborators would love to work with some folks who are interested in mixing controlled lighting with glass mosaic. We'll take care of the mosaic part. We know the community. You'll tell us about possibilities of incorporating some durable, low maintenance tech, collaboratively. No commitment until we make the final proposal. Right now, I'm just trying to see if there is any interest. We would love working with some of you DorkbotDC'ers. Please let me know right away. The preliminary proposal goes in on Monday. The display need not be big, nor must the refresh rate be high. It would just allow for people at one installation to see that there are people at another installation. 24/7 unattended operation required. There are a bunch of minimal PCs around $100: http://www.norhtec.com/products/mcjr/index.html http://www.ewayco.com/low-cost-system-100-pc-news.html They'd need a webcam and a monitor, so things quickly add up. The ASUS AirGuru SV1 Skype videophone @ $260 is another option, but I don't really need the WiFi, plus I don't know if it can dependably keep a connection up for long periods of time. With this deposit he sought to establish the priority of his sound-inscribing invention, the phonautogram. He included several phonautograms made in 1860 of vocal scales, songs, and recitations. Example ?No. 5??Au Clair de la Lune from April 9th 1860?is the earliest dated sound recording in the deposit. Scott prepared its recording surface by wrapping a sheet of paper around a cylinder which he rotated over a smoking lantern to cover with soot. He recorded with two styli?one driven by the vibrations of a tuning fork, the other driven by a membrane vibrating in sympathy with his voice. He removed the paper from the cylinder and immersed it in an alcohol-based fixative. Au Clair de la LuneScott made this recording to be seen, not heard. He sang purposely into his instrument to reveal the shape of sounds and the frequency of his notes. In listening to Au Clair we eavesdrop not on a musical performance, but on a scientific experiment?wafting imperfectly through a window in time. It is with this recording that Dust-to-Digital proudly inaugurates its vinyl imprint Parlortone. The one-sided, 45rpm record comes complete with an etched back, a descriptive essay and a reproduction of ?douard-L?on Scott de Martinville?s original Au Clair de la Lune phonautogram. Most of you know Gareth Branwyn, co-overlord of DorkbotDC, editor at Make, and all around great writer and maker. Gareth had a mild heart attack last Wednesday and had to undergo a triple bypass on Friday. We're lucky that he got the warning before a severe manifestation. Though very sore and still a bit shell-shocked by the huge changes over the last 5 days, he is well and recovering on target. He isn't receiving visitors yet, and will likely not be up for lots of folks coming by. Gareth has given a lot to the tech community over the past 20+ years and has been especially instrumental to the burgeoning maker movement. If you want to wish him well, drop him a line here, or tweet it to him @garethb2 and/or use hashtag #weluvgar Also, if you have any links for him to breaking maker stuff for consideration for the Make Blog, please send them here. Thanks, and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask me. As you were... Message-ID: <4A8C659E.7080106@thinkthankthunk.com> All, Earlier this year I looked at the Saw recorder. It had a big blob of black glue over the chip, I figured out it's built on the Nuvotron ChipCorder ISD1600B: http://www.nuvoton-usa.com/hq/enu/ProductAndSales/ProductLines/ConsumerElectronicsIC/ISDVoiceIC/ISDChipCorder/ISD1600B.htm The 1600B pdf (linked on this web page) has a typical application circuit given. The Saw recorder is an almost identical implementation of this circuit!! I was looking for a small recorder/playback board for a Easy Button hack. A few years ago I had built one based on the Radio Shack recorder module http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2102855 (I got it on sale). I improved the impedance matching, but it was based on this easy/evil hack: http://www.impulsedesign.com/easy_button.pdf . This was cool because you could record from the speaker or connect it (w/ 1/8" audio cable) to a computer and directly record from the computer (my impedance improvement made this easier). Unfortunately the Saw recorder was too much trouble for my Easy Button project: it has many more components (making it really tough to fit in the button) and it was based on a electret mic, so interfacing to a PC/MAC was more difficult. My original intent was a cool project for kids to make at Robotfest. Scott Austin P.S. Early this year, I asked allectronics.com how many of these they had (I didn't want to run out before my workshop started!). If I recall correctly they had over 10,000! If you push pixels, sling code, trickle paint, create content or belt out beats this is for you. Okay even if you don't do that stuff - if you're kinda awesome this is where you want to be. Tickets are currently free for attendees, but if sponsorships don't cover our costs we might ask for you to chip in. K? What: Halloween is the best holiday on Earth, so we?re going to steal an undisclosed location for 1,000+ people to get spooky-creative in on Friday, October 30th from 9pm until we run out of dry ice. Don?t come to get wasted ? come to get inspired ? but um...there will be plenty of drinks at the open bar for sure. Consider techARTS a human mashup experiment. We're going to provide the venue, music (submit & vote for performers here) and blank slate for you to do the following: * Meet the brightest minds in tech and the arts in the region * Express your passion with opportunities to pimp your work * Find collaborators for the stuff you want to bring to life * Party like it?s 1999 1989 TechArts Awards: Getting awards in the tech/creative space can be kinda lame. There are ?expert? ?celebrity? ?judges? that decide who?s in and who?s out. We think YOU should decide who?s work needs to be seen and known about. Here?s what you can do: * Nominate a friend, colleague, or yourself (you know you want to): submit to techAWARDS and/or artsAWARDS * Let people know you?re up for a nod at TechArts o Pimp Your techAWARD to Facebook and Twitter o Pimp Your artsAWARD to Facebook and Twitter * If you want to sponsor a prize (in kind, cash or whatever) email Peter When: Friday, October 30th, 2009 from 9pm to 5am Where: An undisclosed location in DC. Hint: cool kids hang out there Why: TechArts is an un-entity?not a company/non-profit, or anything resembling a structured organization. We?re a collective focused on uniting the technology and creative communities in the greater DC region for the purpose of building a stronger culture of innovation. I formerly taught high school computer science here in DC and still have a set of Lego Mindstorms NXT kits. I thought it'd be cool to invite people to come down, especially kid/adult pairs, and experiment with them for a day. I'll have copies of the Lego software & tutorials and a few other guided tutorials available. I know the Mindstorms kit is probably way below most of your expertise, but hopefully you know some people who want to get a start with robotics. Kids are not mandatory, two-adult pairs are welcome too -- maybe a nerd date? Personally, I would be excited to have other attendees with some building experience for your creativity and ability to help others. Tickets are just $30/pair to cover some snacks and such. http://jumpstartlab.com/courses/robotics/090913/ Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions. Contact me ASAP. Message-ID: <6da7b18f0908291342y6cc3251akffaed6d752f459d@mail.gmail.com> Hackerspace House forming near UMD College Park! Possible immediate move-in! This house will be a collective of hackers/geeks who share knowledge, do awesome projects, and have a blast. There is one particular house that I've found that is near the PG metro that would work well, and the owner is himself a hacker and totally cool with us turning the basement into a workshop, upgrading the power, etc. If this house doesn't work out, we could find another with similar traits, but having an owner that's one of us would be a bonus. This place is a 3BR/2BA. What will make this house awesome? * hackers doing hacker stuff in our basement laboratory/workshop! (electronics, metal, wood, etc) * screenings of movies in our home theater * geeky shenanigans all the time. * growing stuff in our garden (or is that just me...) * FIOS absurdly fast internet * creating music in our music room/studio/sound lab Personally, I'm looking for a 2-3 year long situation and I'd love to share some good times with some like minded folks. I work as an IT manager and I'm interested in the overlap between psychology, anthropology, philosophy, and technology, including AI, wearables, and semantic software and will be going back to school for that stuff. I'm a HacDC member and Dorkbot DC event attendee. My move-out date for my current place is Sept 10th, so this would happen pretty much immediately. If you need until Oct 1st to move in, we might be able to work with you. The craigslist ad for the house I've already scoped out is here: http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/mld/apa/1341396292.html Depending on whether we take this particular house, rent will be in the $500 - $700 range per person, all inclusive. If interested, send information about yourself and what you're into and looking for.
