Hi Gareth,
Besides the obvious tools (soldering station, DMM, 3rdhand tool) which  
I'm assuming is not what you're after... the tool I use all the time  
for wiring is the "Stripmaster" It's great. Saves me time and  
frustration of removing the shielding from the ends of wires 8-22AWG.  
It's like magic! I love it.

As for third hand tool... If my girlfriend is not in shouting  
distance, then I usually grab a simple 4inch spring clamp. I have a  
bunch of them scattered about. They're cheap and work well in a pinch.
