I had an Arduino proto shield in the mix to mount the solid-state
relay and some resistors for the IR LED current limit and the
phototransistor pull-up. Instead of using a solid-state relay, I am
going to use the on-board SN754410NE quad H-dirvers on the Make
Application Board. It is a bit apples and oranges as my solid state
relay was good for both 12VDC and 120 VAC, but I decided that a 120
VAC fan is a little dangerous to send out into the world, so I'm
backing down to a 12 VDC fan.

The resistors are still needed, but I am going to mount them "in-line"
with the wires.
