(Apologies for cross-posting.)
Alden Hart posted a link to a segment from Herzog's "Encounters at the
End of the World" featuring astounding recordings of Antarctic Weddell
seals made by Doug Quin, to the HacDC blabber list a couple of days ago
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OlrcbKlW4Tw).
I spoke with Doug today. He's on his way to New Caledonia for a month to
do a biodiversity assay of songbirds. The team he'll be joining will be
using a device and software from Wildlife Acoustics:
The Song Meter can record up to 40hrs onto flash cards, on a schedule,
using 4 D-cells.

The Song Scope application (Windows/OSX/Linux) can tease out specific
species' songs with 80% accuracy from field recordings.
