Hope I'm not too late, I've been haveing email fluctuations lately:
Not being a goverdrone I can carry real tools on my belt daily so here's my list:

1--Victorianox Swiss Champ
http://www.swissknifeshop.com/Swiss_Army_SwissChamp_SOS_Set_p/sacmpsos.htm
ya gotta love the glasses screwdriver and the pen, I've even used those dinky pliers.

2-- Leatherman tool
http://www.leatherman.com/multi-tools/full-size-tools/default.aspx
I still have my original, which is probably the current Fuse or Blast, it's really all about useful pliers.

3-- Maglight solitaire
http://www.maglite.com/product.asp?psc=1AAACELL
hangs out on my keychain, I'd love something brighter in an LED but I haven't found anything rugged enough and affordable

4-- Moleskin Notebook
http://www.moleskines.com/klmb712.html
still the ultimate memory expander (though much love to my EEE PC 1000) and the squares help me draw accurately.

5-- Reading glasses

What can I say I'm old. The hard case helps them survive in my pocket.

Other vital bits of pocket litter: !0 gig usb thumb drive, ipod nano, and a pill fob for my keychain with pain pills, allergy meds, imodium, provigal, and BP meds.

Home and shop includes cordless drill, silicone glue/caulk, duct tape, Vise grips, WD40, super glue, saber saw, ladder, air compessor and tools, hammer socket set and so on to infinity. Every tool is vital when it's the right one.

Here's a torum devoted to these questions, leaning towards police/EMT gadgets, but cool and helpful:
