I, probably like everyone else, love my standard "third hand" tools - 
mine is from American Science and Surplus for about 9.00US 
(http://www.sciplus.com/singleItem.cfm/terms/14760)  although I did take 
off the magnifying glass.   The best use so far has been to use it as an 
LCD Display stand for my microcontroller and robotics projects.

I have also been building custom ones, to clip to the sides of my 
portable workbench and hold a range of things.  I make them out of 
plywood clips, copper bus wire and large alligator clips. See

   for what they look like. They hold onto the side of my bench and can 
be bent to support all kinds of things- I even use them to hold PCB
