Oslo A practical workshop with Martin Howse and Julian Oliver. Thursday 6th November - Saturday 8th November 2008 Atelier Nord, Wergelandsveien 17, Oslo ( Kunstnernes Hus) Participation fee is 500 NOK Application deadline Friday 24th October Send applications with brief statement of interest to office@anart.no Further information: http://anart.no/projects/data_forensics // With an emphasis on the active construction of hardware and software apparatus, the Data forensics workshop will apply practical tools, techniques and theory to analyse [un]intentional data emissions within the city of Oslo. The workshop extends a succession of practical and theoretical investigations concerned with electromagnetic [EM] phenomena into the world of data space. Spanning signal and noise, digits and decay, Data Forensics explores the often unintuitive reality that digital data has its own electromagnetic (physical) presence, a physicality that can be read and perhaps even modulated through the carrier medium itself. Data Forensics presents a window between the domain of the digital and the physical; the digital both informs and reveals the physical and vice versa. It is through this relationship that we can find a fortuitous exchange of practices. We can - for example - borrow techniques from real-world forensics to examine and attempt to make sense of leaked data emissions. Alternatively, we can expose and elaborate upon the notion of data sedimentation; taking an archaeological approach to examining everyday digital activity. Topics for active research and discussion within an artistic context include but are not limited to: making sense of landscape from a forensics perspective, photo and audio reconnaissance, data sedimentation, data visualisation, TEMPEST, cryptography, mapping of event intensity using GPS, signals, noise and strategies for interpretation of the intentionality of transmissions Participants do not need to have practical or theoretical experience within these multiple fields; a keen interest in this novel artistic terrain is essential. Participation is 500 NOK Application deadline Friday 24th October Send applications with brief statement of interest to office@anart.no Further information: http://anart.no/projects/data_forensics Questions to: office@anart.no http://xxxxx.1010.co.uk http://www.1010.co.uk From saul at theps.net Thu Oct 23 02:27:11 2008 From: saul at theps.net (Saul Albert) Date: Thu Oct 23 02:27:36 2008 Subject: [dorkbotlondon-blabber] 'Who Wants to Be' v.3.0 - 7th November, London Bridge Message-ID: <20081023062711.GF27884@localdomain> Hello Dorkbots! Once again, you are all invited to version 3.0 of: * 'Who Wants to Be...?' - the spontaneous, democratic game-show * * 7th November 2008, 8-10pm * * The Unicorn Theatre, London Bridge * 'Who Wants to Be...?' is a live reality game-show where the audience make up the questions, have all the answers, and set their own rules. 200 people will buy ?10 tickets making a ?2000 cash pot, then spend 2 hours proposing, discussing, and creatively modifying each others ideas for what to do together with a ?2k budget. 'Who Wants to Be...?' is: A radical experiment in audience participation http://tinyurl.com/wwtb0 A fun new way to support & fund local projects http://tinyurl.com/wwtb3 A tool for public visualisation and co-design http://tinyurl.com/wwtb1 Previously on 'Who Wants to Be...?' the audience very nearly voted to sack the host and put their money behind the theatre bar. Suggestions included group ownership of a dog, guerilla gardening in the City of London, and a symbolic burning of the cash. Finally the audience decided to buy a woodland! Each audience member is now a co-owner of a share in a beautiful Welsh woodland to be looked after for future generations. ?2000 buys anything from a prefabricated log cabin to a signed Damien Hirst print, 9642 packets of crisps, or rent on a London flat for a month of parties. Gamble it, donate it, invest it, waste it! Bring your ideas, your tenner and your vote to the Unicorn Theatre on Friday 7th of November and decide. The UK Government produces and distributes a vast amount of documents and datasets - from national statistics to environmental information, from socio-economic data to legal material. Recent technologies allow this information to be explored, built upon and made accessible in new ways - whether through visual representation, semantic interlinking, or through social media applications. This informal, hands-on workshop will bring government information experts together with those who are interested in finding and re-using government information. In addition to focused discussions about legal and technological aspects of re-use, government information assets will be documented and tagged on CKAN, a registry of knowledge resources. This workshop is presented by The Open Knowledge Foundation, the Office of Public Sector Information (OPSI), the Power of Information (POI) Taskforce and mySociety. It is kindly hosted by the London Knowledge Lab. --- Workshop on Finding and Re-using Open Scientific Resources ========================================================== * When: Saturday 8th November 2008, 1100-1600 * Where: London Knowledge Lab, 23-29 Emerald Street, London, WC1N 3QS. * Wiki page: http://okfn.org/wiki/OpenScience/Workshop * Participation: Attendance is free.
