They decided they wanted a to commission a 'democracy bench'. http://whowantstobe.co.uk/2008/11/who-wants-to-bench-call-for-bench-proposals/ I have no idea what a democracy bench is, but it could look like this: http://www.boingboing.net/2009/02/04/linda-heshs-bench-pr.html I suppose. It could look like anything. Taking the 1.8k as a guideline for a budget - would any of you be interested in proposing a bench? On the 1st March, we will put the entries online and allow voting and commenting on people's favourite benches. We've had some really nice entries so far - so it should be fun. Please make a submission! As I understand it, most sound cards have a capacitor in front of their audio outputs to remove DC offset. In-Reply-To: References: <20090205153711.GF30051@localdomain> Message-ID: Hell Evan Oooh that's really interesting. Are you doing this to extend the cut- off of your soundcard closer to 0Hz? I wrote to Motu the other day, asking them for their official spec on various soundcards, below 20Hz, and they said they'd never needed to measure them. In fact they wrote me something patronising - and woefully inaccurate - about humans only being able to perceive sounds above 20Hz. I needed to source a new soundcard as I'm doing some more experiments with infrasound and killed an old soundcard last time around. In case it's interesting: I've been ordering an Earthworks mic and will be testing the setup with a Motu soundcard the mic arrives in a week or so. If you can cut out these capacitors, without killing equipment, I'd be really interested to know. Personally, I'd play safe and put in a really, really big capacitor - but not take it out altogether. I choose a whimsical name like Dorksnow and what happens? It snows! Despite the weather Dorksnow is STILL ON this weekend unless we get really bad conditions on Saturday morning. Dorks are a hardy bunch. We'll keep the Wiki up to date with the status. Check before travelling as they say on the news. http://dorkbotlondon.org/wiki/index.php/DorkSnow Activities will start around 10:30 on Saturday. The initial events will be the circuit building (you need to have pre-registered for this) and the Arduino introduction. For the Arduino introduction don't forget your Arduino, laptop with Arduino software and USB lead. You are encouraged to bring Arduino projects you are working on to demo or if you want to develop them during the weekend. Later on Saturday (from around 5pm) we'll switch more in to a presentation/performance mode. For the programme so far please see the timetable on the Wiki. I expect there will be a variety of ad-hoc activities as well as the formal programme throughout the weekend. Anyone coming along is welcome to bring things to talk about or demo. Also if you want to run a spontaneous workshop on a technical or craft activity then feel free. As well as technology there will also be cakes (nom nom nom) and an Indian Buffet on Saturday night and of course the famous Dorkbot bar (donation of unusual cocktail ingredients are welcome). We think that the Internet won't be working in the building so please preload any software or materials you need. Hope to see many of you there. Wrap up warm. The output of the op-amps in the circuit are pins 1 and 7. Looking at the board it appears that these are already DC coupled to the output sockets on the RHS (at least I can't see a capacitor in that part of the circuit). There may be a decoupling capacitor further back. Let me know if you sort it out - I am still looking for the same thing! I remember, there were two types of soundcards. One keeps working when shorting capacitors, the other does not due to some technical, internal stuff, I cannot remember. Looking for somebody from London to swap flat temporarily Message-ID: <498DBE14.70803@c-base.org> Hi there, I am John Shaw, member of Berlin hackerspace c-base.org which you may already heard of. I would like to spend spring 2009 in London, so I am looking for somebody from London who is interested in swaping flat with me. My prefered periode will be 9th of April until mid of June but I am flexible regarding dates and duration. I am 33 years old and self-employed since 2001. My long term project will come to an end in Q1/2009 and after living in Berlin for the last five years, I am looking for some changes regarding business and maybe location. I already know London but only as a tourist and I definitely like to take a closer look. I will continue doing some of my business from London. So I do not depend on searching for a job in London to finance this trip. What I offer - 3 room flat in Berlin in Friedrichshain/Lichtenberg, no flatshare - refurbished only some years ago - total ~ 70 square meters - good standard, wooden floor (laminate), new bathroom incl. bathtub - whasing machine with integrated dryer - kitchen with basic equipment - small bedroom with Kingsize bed - livingroom with sofa, armchairs, entertainment stuff - small balcony The sofa may be used by a guest to sleep. There is a third room which is my homeoffice and storage. I will put my private stuff inside for periode of swap. You can use it as storage only and use my office equipment if you wish to. EXCELLENT public transport. Overground (S-Bahn) is ONE minute walk away and runs all night long during the weekend and very late even on weekdays. Only TWO stops into Friedrichshain (Warschauer Strasse) and some minutes more into centre Alexanderplatz. The street and the borough is really quite. Bakery, fastfood, small store within some minutes walking distance. Supermarket and some pubs 5 minutes to walk. What I am looking for Single person or a couple with a decent sense for personal, private property. I dont want to worry about my flat, my interiour or my remaining private stuff getting f**ked up in any way. I will of course treat your belongings with the same type of respect. You should be a member of a hackerspace or similar type of community (like dorkbot) with some kind of positive reference as I have my references within the c-base group. At least somebody within such a community must know you. You got the idea. I am not smoking and I will not under any circumstances allow smoking in my flat. Your flat should be in zone 1,2 or 3 if possible as I want to experience London, but not a suburb. Own flat, apartment or studio prefered but flatshare may be OK, too. Your lodging should somehow meet a proper standard but does not need to be spacious. This means, I do not depend on any luxury but I would not like to end up in a tiny, dirty, dark and moisty hole of a flatshare. So, if you are interested in spending spring 2009 in Berlin without costs regarding accommodation, send mail to john@c-base.org as soon as possible. I will be in London February 13-15, so wee can meet and have a personal chat. cu John From sharpie7 at pinedragon.com Sun Feb 8 16:27:15 2009 From: sharpie7 at pinedragon.com (Iain Sharp) Date: Sun Feb 8 16:27:42 2009 Subject: [dorkbotlondon-blabber] Dorksnow 2009 - thaw Message-ID: <6CE61712337241D88F27FF7A55F33929@bigpc> All, Thanks to all who contributed to and attended Dorksnow. If you have to output frames, you should buy yourself an USB card called "Easylase". If has a frame double buffer, which holds your laser pictures which can consist of several thousand points. The frame is repetitively send via the DAC to the output with the scanspeed you have selected. This has some advantages: - You can not have a standing single beam (dropout) by software error or CPU overusage. I dont have to tell you about the danger of standing beams. - You do not have to mess round with the soundcard driver. Easylas has a proper API. - You got a blanking and 3 color output lines to modulate the laser(s) Doku stuff http://www.jmlaser.com/downloads/Users_Manual_EasyLase_USB.pdf http://www.jmlaser.com/downloads/EasyLase_USB_Drivers%2BDoku.zip There is a (open source?) project with a quite similar USB device call bILDA at http://www.linux-laser.org/bilda/bilda-hw.php You see, I am a little bit into laser. In fact I am using Pangolin QM2000 and LDS, if you know this systems. If you describe you project, I may can help you. Hoping to look at how the medium can be used and also to compile a list of the top ten 'twartists' to follow. Can anyone help? Do you twitter? Do you follow any artists? Are you an artist using twitter? Many thanks Ruth J x _________________________________________________________________ Check out the new and improved services from Windows Live. I really don't give a fig about security and I am much more interested in hardware and wacky/artistic things than software stuff. Any advice on whether HAR would be worth the trip? Also do they let camper vans in to their camping areas or would I need to revert to a tent? Cheers Iain -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... As part of that, and to share the delights of old big boxen with the students, we're going on a field trip and any interested dorks are very much invited. Hope you can make it; it's going to be awesome. * Who: Funix faculty and friends * Where: Meet at Euston station outside WHSmiths (map at http://is.gd/jGQj ) * When: Saturday, 10:00am at Euston Station * How much: ~ ?30 (Return train journey ?18.80, Bletchley Park membership is ?10 for 1 year) * Why: Beautiful old machines (e.g. a PDP 11 with vector display), enthusiastic volunteer guides (many of whom worked there in WWII), meet the guy that rebuilt colossus in his garage and exclaim "no effin way" when you see the 30mph punch tape reader. The National museum of computing ( http://www.tnmoc.org/ )is located at Bletchley park, and it's a strange place filled with heavy electronics from another era. If you were disappointed by the Science Museum's computer section, this should be much more to your liking. I didn't go to whatthehack but went to hackersatlarge, 8 years ago. I found the talks not very interesting, lots of security and network exploring stuff, and the catering not too good. On the plus side it was a really nice atmosphere, well organised and had great beer. Also they are welcoming people to set up their own villages, we could make a dorkbot one. I made a page for it here some months ago but no interest as yet: https://wiki.har2009.org/page/Village:Dorkbot . I guess there is surprisingly little hacker culture/dorkbot crossover. You'd be able to take your camper van I reckon. So I reckon it would be fun if we can get more dorkbots involved. I'll send a probe to the dorkbot overlord list.
