All welcome. Info below Cheers Jim Join us for drinks and a talk by the first PermaCultures artist in residence Simon Blackmore. Simon will talk about his previous work and his residency at SPACE. Thursday 7 May 6.30pm During his time at SPACE Blackmore adapted an open source rapid prototyping machine to convert electro-magnetic activity (such as electro-magnetic frequencies as used by mobile phones) into beautiful animated drawings. Blackmore creates sculptures with a lo-fi aesthetic drawing on influences from woodworking, hobby style electronics and open source software. The time consuming process of these works aims to question the role of the individual in relation to the mechanisms of a technologically driven society. Alongside his solo practice Blackmore collaborates with Antony Hall and Steve Symons under the name 'Owl Project'. Combining rustic woodworking, electronics and experimental music, pieces such as 'Sound Lathe', 'Log1ks' and 'ilogs' have been exhibited and demonstrated live nationally and internationally. http://www.simonblackmore.net http://www.owlproject.com/ London and Berlin based artist Nick Laessing has been selected for the next PermaCultures residency. Also at SPACE for First Thursday 6pm - 9pm Join in with Belgrade based art activist collective Skart in an informal evening of creative collaboration! Anyway - they're after a post-doc researcher, a little teaching and the opportunity to do research and hang out amongst some really fantastic people, in a nice, very child-friendly city. If I had a phd and some kids, I'd be on it! Sadly, neither blessings are mine as of yet, so perhaps some of you might be interested? If it's something on the screen, remember that it takes more than 10ms to update the screen and you don't necessarily know where in the refresh cycle the screen is. So there's immediately a 10ms uncertainty in any result. If it's something external, like a light, then the most accurate method would be to have the arduino both operate the light (perhaps in response to a message from the computer) and detect the button. One of the most accurate measurements you can make is with an audio input - it's clocked at tens of kHz so acts like an oscilloscope. Again, you get best accuracy if the same measurement records both stimulus and response. -adrian From cathedrow at gmail.com Mon May 18 12:33:02 2009 From: cathedrow at gmail.com (Peter Knight) Date: Mon May 18 12:33:17 2009 Subject: [dorkbotlondon-blabber] buttons and timing In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Go Arduino. The pulseIn() function returns how long a pin has been in a state to the microsecond, to a high accuracy. You're probably talking a 20 line program to do everything you need, and output results to the serial port for readback by the PC, and your total cost will be about ?30. Happy to assist if needed. You've got to use the sound port itself. The point about the sound hardware is that it clocks data in or out at a fixed frequency unaffected by interrupts, cpu loading etc. If you can start a sound recording at the same instant as the sound player, and arrange a small step voltage to be applied by the buttons, you can then search the captured data for the step. You can probably arrange one button to make a positive step and the other a negative step, or use different sized steps. Note that the sound input is probably AC coupled so it will be a spike but should still be fairly distinct. You can count samples from the start of the recording to find out how long the subject took. The uncertainty is then the time between starting the play and the recording. Play with Xoscope to see what will work. For perfect results you'd start the recording first and record the audio stimulus along with the button inputs, then find the stimulus itself in the recording. That's probably much harder, but it could be done. -adrian From alex at slab.org Tue May 19 04:59:51 2009 From: alex at slab.org (alex) Date: Tue May 19 05:00:05 2009 Subject: [dorkbotlondon-blabber] buttons and timing In-Reply-To: <4A11E86C.8050505@toynbee.org.uk> References: <4A118D68.8090802@toynbee.org.uk> <4A11E86C.8050505@toynbee.org.uk> Message-ID: 2009/5/18 Adrian Godwin : > Not if you mean the games port - that's just a simple switch, so the code > that reads it is subject to all linux's usual potential delays. I guess an arduino could be overkill for this... The other great thing about doing it as audio is that it's super easy to measure the total latency with a pulse and some feedback from output to input. > Note that the sound input is probably AC coupled so it will be a spike but > should still be fairly distinct. Ok so I send DC offset but the soundcard turns it into a spike? No problem. > You can count samples from the start of the > recording to find out how long the subject took. I'll write one low-latency program running on the PC that both sends out the samples and listens for responses. I can measure everything as samples according to the soundcard clock. > For perfect results you'd start the recording first and record the audio > stimulus along with the button inputs, then find the stimulus itself in the > recording. That's probably much harder, but it could be done. Hmm, yes... Or could send out a pulse to a separate channel on a multichannel sound card, which the arduino picks up and uses to measure the response time. I think this is going a bit too far for me though. Sarah will talk about her work as sound artists, engineer and programmer. Better living through ALife Sound artist, engineer and semi-competent programmer Sarah Angliss (Spacedog UK) will share a handful of cunningly simple tricks, inspired by animals, that can be used to make your exhibits, programs and anything else you can dream of more sublime. Use 'bee vision' to track small moving objects with very little computing power. Borrow some ideas from Darwian evolution to solve problems at great speed. Give people the impression you've made a really intelligent robot, when there's very little 'under the hood'. An evening of invisibility, intangibility and unexpected properties as artist Julie Freeman, nanotechnologist Jeremy Ramsden, and Pankaj Vadgama, discuss the nanocosm and the extraordinary beings that populate it. Artists and scientists alike are fascinated by the extraordinary world of nanotechnology. Join us for a journey through these concepts with an artist and a scientist, and discuss the value and importance of such collaborations. Jeremy Ramsden will discuss the latest advances in nanotechnology while artist Julie Freeman reveals how collaborating with Jeremy has influenced her work NanoNovels - graphic artworks and stories inspired by nanoparticles. Pankaj Vadgama completes the trio as he describes how nanotechnology is revolutionising medicine. John Hambley, who brought Julie and Jeremy together, will facilitate and give an insight into the impact of artist residencies in non-arts environments. Is art a good way of enabling scientists to communicate their work? Or can artistic ambiguity and metaphor compromise the communication of scientific information? If we want to separate fact from fiction, where does the truth lie? Come along and join the discussions. SPEAKERS: Julie Freeman is currently artist in residence at the Microsystems & Nanotechnology Centre, Cranfield University. Prof Jeremy Ramsden is Chair of Nanotechnology, Cranfield University, Fellow of the IOM3, Editor-in-chief of the Journal of Biological Physics and Chemistry, and of Nanotechnology Perceptions. Professor Pankaj Vadgama is currently Director of the IRC in Biomedical Materials, Queen Mary, University of London and Professor of Clinical Biochemistry, Queen Mary?s School of Medicine & Dentistry. Head of Service in the Department of Clinical Biochemistry, Barts and the Royal London NHS Trust. It was incredible that the size of the construction (over 0.5 km in diameter) was required to get to an end point of tiny tiny waste radiation output. It was really interesting to speak to the artists about their residencies as it was a similar experience to my recent one. And I noticed that all three artists were women of an ilk within a 10 year age bracket. I wonder if a male artist wasn't seen as someone who could permeate the scientists? There was no mention of the energy consumption - I'm curious how much it takes to accelerate those electrons in relation to me switching my lights off and turning the thermostat down 1 degree :) One thing I felt I missed was the actual output of the imaging that happens at the end of the beam line - I did miss the first bit of the presentation - but all the images I saw were computer simulations of what the scientists had 'seen'.
