As an aside - I used to do my own board etching using special paper that 
one laserprints the resist pattern on, then either iron or (better) 
laminate onto the copper boards.

However - this changed all that:

For hobby work, where time = money at some level, it very rarely makes 
sense to do your own boards.  Also the barebones process makes two-sided 
boards with plated holes and vias possible; for homebrew, one generally 
has to design to make it easy(er) to fabricate at home, which 
significantly constrains the design possibilities.
