Hi Alison,

It's pretty easy to send MIDI from a microcontroller. It's just serial 
data. Sending is easier than receiving (since you don't have to write a 
parser). If you can get your instrument sending serial data then you're 
90% of the way home. Do a little web searching and you'll find lots of 
info about sending MIDI data from microcontrollers.
