Frequency Hopping featuring the Ballet Mécanique Orchestra
LEMUR continues our collaboration with Paul Lehrman on the Ballet
Mécanique Project by providing the pit orchestra to Frequency
Hopping, a new play by The Hourglass Group. Running May 29th through
June 29th at 3LD Art & Technology Center, Frequency Hopping is a dark
comedy based on the remarkable collaboration in 1940 between
Hollywood glamour girl Hedy Lamarr and "bad boy" composer George
Antheil (the composer of Ballet Mécanique) on a secret communication
system.
The orchestra consists of LEMUR robots playing xylophones, bass
drums, gong, siren, doorbells, miniature singing bowls and simulated
airplane propellors, plus eight Yamaha player pianos. The robotic
assemblage performs the play's original score, written by New York
composer Joshua Fried.
Special Performance June 7th: The performance on June 7th will be
followed by Antheil's Legacy, a tribute to composer George Antheil.
This very special evening will feature the New York premiere
performance of the full-length, fully robotic version of Ballet
Mécanique, plus performances by other artists in the spirit of George
Antheil.
