Hi, I'm Alex, I haven't really introduced myself either.. I'll do that below but
first as a response to your email:
if you want to start super simple and just get something that makes sound you
might want to make one of those 'atari punk console' things [I always thought
that was a stupid name but whatever]:

I figure it is best to start small, and it is fun to have things that make
sound... after that you can move to bigger and cooler projects..
Introduction:
My name is Alex Norman, I'm originally from PDX and I recently moved back to
portland after 6.5 years being away [seattle (undergrad CSE at UW, 1 year work
after), santa barbara (grad school 'media arts and technology' at UCSB)]. I'm a
programmer, into linux and free-libre open source software, have worked with
atmega chips a decent amount in the past [just getting back into it], into
music, video, computers.. I don't have a job at the moment, I'm mostly just
working on some hardware projects (some for my own use and some for doug
theriault, a local noise musician), and trying to finish up some software
projects for release (GPL).

I've been to one dorkbot meeting in pdx, the st patrick's day one, and I'm "ax"
on the #dorkbotpdx irc channel.
