Jory was an REU (research experience for undergraduates) under Chris
Adami at the Keck Graduate Institute.  My _guess_ is that by "sensor" he
is not referring to hardware but instead an abstraction developed in an
artificial life universe (e.g. Avida).  I could be wrong.  We coerced
Jory into giving a talk at the last CSS meeting, primarily due to his
glib reference to "dynamic fitness landscapes." [grin]

Even if this is purely about "digital evolution", Adami is a solid
researcher; so, any abstractions should be pretty close, metaphorically,
to actual materials.
