It depends on the size and weight and portability you are looking to
suffer with.

Of course you are going to put LInux on it. Right?

If you are looking light and portable, get the Acer One I've seen them
for 500$ (note they are impossible to upgrade after market by normal
humans)

I have the one with the 8Gig SSD and I'm finding it a bit cramped. I
would be ok with 20Gig, so if I was spending my own $$ I'd wait for
something with a larger SSD. I have seen it with spinning 80gig disk
which could be pretty nice too.

If you don't care about having a > 1 Kg laptop then I would get a
last year's model from Circuit City, Office Depot or TigerDirect.com. They both
sometimes have surprising sales. about 2 years ago we got a supper
nice HP for my mother in law for 500$ through Office depot.
Just don't spend more than 600$
These looks nice to me:

You get the picture...

Or get something used.

But, be sure to get something with Intel integrated graphics and Intel
wireless, or you could have issues with Linux drivers.

If you can hold off until after Xmass you could see more deals. But
if you wait until we are out of the "back-to-school" season you should
also do bit better. I'd shop for a new one in late September or
October, and then after Xmass myself.
