and relays oh my! (Workshop, Sunday 24aug08)

I soldered my H-bridge controller today and got an early instrument rolling:

I tried to post a video but vimeo kept crashing my browser. In the mean
time, the photo shows one motor hooked up with an attached stem from a dried
gourd that is whacking a broken gong. The motor is tilted so gravity brings
the arm/stem back down and whacks the metal bowl. There is a small
potentiometer on the arduino that controls the delay between whacks.
For some reason only the output port for M1 works, but that may be due to my
shabby soldering. I am doing my best to look at the original PCB schematic
and make sure all the connections are good.
To reverse direction is it suppose to be a matter of just changing
digitalWrite(motor1dir, HIGH) to digitalWrite(motor1dir, LOW)? changing that
stops my motor all together.
Lastly, when I try using a 9V .66A power supply for the external power the
chip on the H-bridge gets pretty hot after a few minutes. Is that way too
much i? How can we safely get more strength out of the motor?
Thanks for all your help Don & Adian!
