Hi Alexis,
If you are interested in some counter examples, I've been reading Paul
Eckman's work lately and I could dig some up. He is a famous psych
researcher that studies human emotions and facial muscle movements. He
discusses a few clear cases of behavior that is learned and behavior
that is clearly hardwired in to us. In particular, things such as
smiles aren't learned -- oddly all cultures, even 'stone age' cultures
smile when expressing joy.
Point in short, the hypothesis you mention might have some interesting
gray areas to explore.
