[dorkbotpdx-blabber] Who is NOT going to make it to the TechShopmeetup?

I sincerely hope they do make a profit. But, such a thing doesn't serve
the particular interests being expressed, here. For that, we'll need a
cooperative. It doesn't take much. All we need is a non-profit shell,
a bank account, and enough contributions to pay rent, buy/maintain
machines, liability insurance, and lawyer time.

k-12 education, anyway, not well-paid geeks with disposable income.
Hence, it really argues for cooperation with a college or school
district."

I agree completely, well put.

You are also correct about traveling for good equipment you don't have
to maintain - my complaint is solely the mouthing's of one with more
projects then time already looking at another long commute.

I'm put off by the whole thing, actually. I want an self-constituted
collective, not a for-profit corporation subject to investors.

Ultimately, TechShop, as a corporation, is a very good thing. And I
sincerely hope they do make a profit. But, such a thing doesn't serve
the particular interests being expressed, here. For that, we'll need a
cooperative. It doesn't take much. All we need is a non-profit shell,
a bank account, and enough contributions to pay rent, buy/maintain
machines, liability insurance, and lawyer time.

Plus, this sort of thing should facilitate (if not directly target) k-12
education, anyway, not well-paid geeks with disposable income. Hence,
it really argues for cooperation with a college or school district.

It's unfortunate that I have to advocate with all this pinko-commie
rhetoric. [grin] But, such is life, eh? In any case, I'll give
TechShop a go and see what happens. I'll gladly drive 1.5 hours in
order to use a drill press, metal lathe, planer, table saw, etc. that I
don't have to buy, house, and maintain myself.
