Here's another interesting sounding meeting that some of you might
like to attend. Sorry, it has nothing to do with Dorkbot directly, not
even necessarily involving electricity (!!! though, I do suspect
they'll have some lights on or something). Nonetheless, might be worth
checking out....

Subject: [Css] CSS First Friday Discussion Meeting: June 6, 2008
To: css at cecs.pdx.edu

Date: Friday, 6/6/08

Time: 4:00 to 6:00 (primary discussion from 4:30 to 5:30)

Place: Harder House, Room 104 (HH is at 10th and Market)

Topic: Social Practice Art and Systems Science

Discussion Facilitators: Ally Drozd, Alex McCarl, Harrel Fletcher

We became involved with the Systems Science PhD program last term as
part of our Art and Social Practice class. For the class, we were
asked to learn about another department on campus outside of art. We
had previously met Wayne Wakeland as a part of another exercise for
the class. He was so enthusiastic and passionate about sharing with us
the concepts and ideas behind the somewhat abstract world of SYSC that
we could not help but see how it would go hand in hand with Social
Practice.

We recognize that both fields are taking an interdisciplinary approach
to bridging the work of the scientist/artist with the
community/audience that the work is being done about and for the
benefit of. We have also realized the distinction between theories and
approaches that is important when it comes to defining the open-ended
nature of Social Practice art and certain aspects of SYSC. In our talk
with the CSS, our professor Harrell Fletcher will discuss the concept
of Social Practice art and share examples of projects. We will then
describe our experiences of Social Practice and SYSC and how we see
them as closely related to each other.

Ally and Alex are undergraduate students in the art department at PSU.
Harrell Fletcher is an Assistant Professor at PSU. For the past ten
years he has worked collaboratively and individually on
interdisciplinary, site-specific projects exploring the dynamics of
social spaces and communities.
