My problem was...  Under the "edit" menu -> "Edit mode Ctrl+e"

 

Evidently, all it does is change the cursor shape when you're in edit mode,
it doesn't even change the menu option name.  I must have missed that in the
on-line documentation whereas the link you sent me has a full-color glorious
picture with a title something like "Don't be an idiot, it doesn't run if
you're in edit mode." I may be paraphrasing here but you get the point.

 

There are all sorts of other things in that link that are more to the point
of getting up and running.

 

So, now I have boxes and numbers and objects and it outputs stuff and it's
SO COOL!
