No,
No matter what you do do the ftdi chip you cant make it into a native
driverless usb keyboard, usb mouse, a usb midi device, a usb storage
or any other class of usb device.
It is a serial device requiring drivers even to do that. Thile ftdi
has done a decent job of providing drivers across the three major
platforms including an api to bit fiddle with them its not the same as
being able to write general purpose usb devices that behave the way
you want them to. I will have to find the references on the Arduino
lists which made me name the project after what happens when the
italian left is ineffective. What I remember distinctly was that the
Arduino team was adamant and very blunt about the the ftdi chip
staying in the design.
If you would like some related background you can also look at the
Vvrfreaks thread that Joe at smiley micros started about the same
time. http://www.avrfreaks.net/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=59670
