The speed hasn't been an issue for me. For the ATmega168s I call avrdude
with a bit clock of 1uS. The downloads are quick enough for 168s or 328s. I had
some problems with too fast a bit clock on some chips.
What was a problem was the bit-banged USB interface wasn't always
recognized on my Linux box. I do not know if this was a driver issue
or something else in the Linux version I am using. The AVR ISPMKII
just worked.
