An update on the hardware side of the RFID project for Open Source
Bridge. (http://opensourcebridge.org/

The protocol we're using is ISO 15693 at 13.56MHz

The tags come from Mouser and are $1 each or $0.48 for 250+

The USB connected reader comes from rfidgeek.com (in Texas). Its $95
and has about a 3cm read range.

Here is a video of the reader and tags in action.

After wading through lots of standards and frequencies, I can say this
is the least expensive RFID reader setup I have seen yet, that uses
"modern" RFID tags. The next step is to get software (probably written
in 'microperl') on a WGT634U to take the RFID data from the reader and
push it over HTTP to a central server.
