[dorkbotpdx-blabber] fun with dial-up modems

Hey all,

I am trying to put together an abstract demonstration about transferring
information via sound. I had the vision of dialing into a modem connected to
a linux box; opening a serial terminal to display incoming data; and then
replacing the sending modem with an ipod or something with a prerecorded
audio file that will be decoded as some ascii strings (e.g. "hello world").

Is that crazy? I've been reading a bit about using mgetty and setting up a
PPP server to recieve calls, but how could I display any incoming data that
is human readable in real-time? I know there is a lot of expertise playing
with serial RS-232 on this list, so I thought I would through the idea out
there.

I have a pair of external US Robotic 56k modems to play with.

Thanks!

Michael
