Maxim makes some my-tee-fine rs485 tranceivers. The MAX13089E:

is probably the most flexible of the ones in a DIP package that I've
used. you can connect it via an inverter to a MAX232 or similar (you
might not need the inverter, check your datasheet). The 13089E can be
hard to get sometimes, so the MAX485:

might me a better bet


you can connect the whole bit to your serial port and watch it with
the terminal emulator of your choice.
