Bart gave some really great advice.  If you're perhaps nervous about 
opening up the the thing and poking around inside, you could maybe bring 
it to the next casual meeting (assuming it's portable).  The combined 
skill set could probably either get you back recording again or provide 
you with a recommended next approach.

The fact that it was due to a fall is a STRONG indicator of mechanical 
failure, the common ones Bart already described (cable or power 
connector breaking off, socketed things (fuse, tube, chips) being 
unsocketed, etc)...

The fact that it still rewinds and forwards is pretty curious though.
