The advice so far is good. One thing I would add is that if you used a
credit card to purchase the device, many credit cards have "purchase
protection" for new purchases. This would only be important if the
place where you purchased it refuses to exchange it, or the
manufacturer refuses to repair it (if they somehow figure out that it
was dropped).
